History of McFarlin

McFarlin was founded as a town in 1884 by W. B. McFarlin and his son, A. W. McFarlin. W. B. McFarlin was a prominent attorney who was involved in the railroad business and the insurance industry. Before settlement there was a settlement known as Dutch Settlement and a post office was established there in 1838. W. B. McFarlin was born in 1817, so he was only 21 years old when he came to the Davidson County area. He purchased land in the area and formed a corporation to lay out the town. The town was named for his wife, the former McFarline. McFarlin was incorporated on February 13, 1887. Business started in McFarlin grudgingly. There was no railroad until 1887 and no electric light until 1887 and the telephone was an even later invention. Therefore, the first few years were difficult with very few people in McFarlin and very few businesses operating. However, in the 1890s McFarlin began to experience significant growth due to the success of the Southern Railway, who laid much of their track through McFarlin. McFarlin grew with the railroad and became a town of industrial heritage.
